Sympathy for Britney

I'm not a Britney fan, and I'm far outside her target demographic, but I can't believe people were complaining she looked pudgy the other night.

I read that Jay Leno was making fat jokes.

Jay Leno? What does he look like in the equivalent outfit? No, don't tell me.

    Heehehe!

I actually enjoy Britney's "It's My Prerogative" immensely! :) And, perhaps, I am well-within her target demographic. :)

I object! It's no use to point out that the critics themselves are out of shape. Movie critics aren't filmmakers; food critics aren't chefs; and critics of popular culture are neither sex symbols nor singers.

Now what was the intended effect of Britney's performance? A display of her singing prowess? I daresay not...she was lip-synching, and rather badly at that.

A dance performance then? By all accounts, she didn't even attempt much of the planned choreography, and stumbled through what little she did attempt.

So what are we left with? Britney prancing around in promiscuous dress, mouthing lyrics to a song of promiscuous theme. That is to say, "Look at me--I'm sexy!"

Is it so unruly, then, for critics to respond as they have? "Actually, Britney, as sex symbols go, you're not that spectacular."

On a related note, I recall seeing one video clip (forgive me for following this rubbish) in which Britney says to a photographer, "Get a job, lardass."

    Criticism well-deserved, I say.

  4. Old Zeke, you make some good points.

So for the sake of research, I looked on YouTube at a couple of Britney performances, comparing a video from 2000 with the recent MTV awards fiasco.

By comparison with 2000, her dancing was off, and she barely seemed to be trying. On grainy YouTube, I couldn't tell how bad her lip-synching was, but I'll take on trust it was awful. Now that I've seen it, I totally agree that it was a terrible performance on her part.

And she's definitely heavier than she was in her 2000 performance. I still wouldn't say she was fat in the everyday sense of the word. But she did look fat next to all those super-svelte professional dancers!
