We visited Bingham Canyon Mine today, in Utah. It's where a lot of our copper comes from. You see it as a huge open hole in the ground - 3/4 of a mile deep - with carefully tiered sides.
Where there was a mountain, now there is a hole.
You have to dig when copper is your goal.
