The noise is from a local South African instrument, a horn called a vuvuzela, churned out cheaply in plastic in large quantities. Apparently it's driving some of the players crazy. But the organizers aren't too sympathetic:
'Vuvuzelas are here to stay and they will never be banned.'The wail of the horn

lost its aim.
