Now and then, friends tell me they would like to retire to another country, where they could live more cheaply. Mexico, for instance. Do you know what I always think?
As you get older, you tend to get sick.
Sooner or later you need a doc quick.
But the healthcare there
Gives me a scare.

Having lived abroad as a teacher for 20 years, I have had occasion to use medical services from time to time. The finest care I have EVER received (including the US) was in Mexico City, at the ABC Hospital. In all countries I never waited more than 15 minutes in the emergency room. Can you say that about the US? Also, a good many of the Drs have been trained in the US. I still go to Mexico for dental care. Really excellent! HollyT
I'm all for shopping around, including shopping in other countries!
I'm inclined to think different countries may be better at one thing or another.
The locality within the country matters too. Mexico City is going to be better than some remote area.
As for American medicine, I think it excels at high-tech. If you've got a problem that will be helped by high-tech, I would guess this is usually a good place to be.
