Incumbent Protection Act

As of today, you can't run a broadcast ad criticizing specific members of Congress who are up for re-election. Which is most of them.

Worried about the free speech implications? Don't be! Once they're re-elected, you can buy air-time to criticize them again.

McCain and Feingold - thanks for protecting
All those incumbents who need re-electing!

I hope they feel safer - less troubled by doubt
That people might gang up and throw their butts out.

Thank goodness we've stopped all that partisan strife.
Once you get in - the seat's yours for life!

I really wonder how many groups or candidates actually have the moxie to do that anyway. Most have something they would rather not talk about as well, so tend not to open large boxes of worms.

I wonder how it would be seen in the light of the law to point out all those things it is illegal to criticize and congratulate the incumbent for these bold positions.

Good post.
