Where Are The Hamsters?

I had always believed that "Amsterdam" was Dutch for "hamster-dam".

I assumed that hamsters, in their native habitat of Holland, built dams, much like beavers in the U.S.

But now that I'm here, I've looked around,
And there's not a hamster to be found.

Just a random bit of trivia ...

The city of Amsterdam gets its name from the river that runs through it, the "Amstel". Hence, Amsterdam is the city that dams the Amstel.

... And the beer "Amstel", of course, is from The Netherlands.
