Demeter's Lament

Autumn. The Greeks had a myth for it:
During this time Demeter grieves for her daughter, so she takes her gifts away from the world, and brings on the winter when no grain grows. When Persephone returns from the underworld Demeter returns her gifts to the world, and spring comes. This is why Demeter is associated with the change of the seasons.
The wind runs through the grass
on this chilly November day
and I remember the way you smiled.

Shy but full of joy,
sweet but full of sass.
Alas, my darling child.
