Saw somethin' on TV a while back, PBS probably, that claimed chimps live in an almost constant atmosphere of violence. They gang up on one another, hinting and killing one another, and that human society is amazingly peaceful and nurturing in comparison. So much for all the old hippie, Rousseauian notions of the peaceful life of the "noble savage" in nature.
Yeah, when I was a kid, it was said that humans were the only killer ape. Then they did some careful observaton of chimps in the wild - and found out that they can be really nasty and warlike.
